Where to Hang a Bird Feeder: Placement Rules That Beat Squirrels and Rats
A bird feeder should hang at least 45 cm (18 inches) clear of any wall, fence, pole, trunk or branch, including the branch above it — the minimum clearance Roamwild specifies for the PestOff 3.0. Most squirrel-proof feeders that "stop working" were never broken. They were hung inside that clearance.
A weight-activated feeder is a mechanism with a condition attached: the animal has to put its weight on the port. A squirrel that can brace its back feet on a fence panel, or hook a hind leg round a branch, can reach the seed without ever standing on the perch that would close it. Nothing has failed. The feeder simply never got the chance to work.
That makes placement the highest-leverage thirty seconds in garden bird feeding — and the worst-documented. Search for how far to hang a feeder from a fence and you will be given numbers in feet, in metres, and in inches, none of which agree, and almost none of which can be traced to anybody who measured anything.
This guide separates the two. First, the one clearance figure that has a real, checkable source. Then, honestly, the numbers that do not — and what to do in a garden where the tidy answer does not fit.
Where should you hang a bird feeder?

The 45 cm rule, and where it actually comes from
Roamwild specifies at least 45 cm (18 inches) of clear space between a PestOff feeder and any nearby pole, fence, wall or tree branch. That figure is published on the PestOff 3.0 product page, where it still stands as of September 2026, and the reason given is mechanical rather than aspirational: "if it's too close, squirrels can simply lean in and grab seed without triggering the clever weight-sensitive ports."
Two things about that number are worth being precise about, because almost every other guide blurs them.
The 45 cm figure is Roamwild's own number, for Roamwild's own mechanism. It is a manufacturer's specification for a weight-activated feeder, not an independent research finding, and this guide does not present it as one. What it describes is the reach of a squirrel that has something solid to brace against. Below 45 cm a squirrel can anchor its hind legs and stretch; past it, the animal has to commit its body weight to the feeder itself, which is precisely the moment the ports close.
It is a minimum, not a target. The product page says "at least". More clearance is always better, and there is no distance at which clearance starts working against you.
A squirrel that beats a weight-activated feeder without triggering the ports is almost always telling you something about the hanging position, not the mechanism. Roamwild's own diagnosis of exactly this complaint is that the feeder "is hanging incorrectly and too close to a vertical object."
That last point is worth sitting with, because it is the single most common failure report on any squirrel-proof feeder, and the fix costs nothing.
Which bird feeder siting distances actually have a source?
Of the six feeder siting distances we found in circulation, one can be traced to whoever produced it and five cannot. The 45 cm clearance figure is a published manufacturer's specification. The 5-7-9 rule, the "10 feet from anything jumpable" rule and the "2.5 metres from a trunk" rule appear on retailer pages with no source attached, and they contradict each other.
Here is where most placement guides quietly stop being useful. Search for feeder siting distances and you will find these figures presented with equal confidence:

Set them side by side and the problem is obvious. The "safe" horizontal distance is variously 7 ft, 10 ft or 2.5 m depending on which page you land on, and the same rule that appears as folklore on one site appears as a specification on the next. We went looking for the primary research behind the 5-7-9 rule and could not find any. It circulates because it is memorable, not because somebody measured it.
So this guide does not publish a jump distance. We would be adding a seventh number to a list of six that already disagree.
Why the two kinds of number are not interchangeable
The 45 cm clearance figure and the 5-7-9 distances are not the same kind of claim, which is why one can be specified and the other cannot.
The 5-7-9 numbers are attempts to exceed a squirrel's jumping range — to put the feeder somewhere the animal physically cannot reach. That is a claim about squirrel athleticism, and it needs animal-behaviour evidence that nobody seems to have published.
The 45 cm figure is a claim about leverage, not distance. It is the point at which a squirrel can no longer brace against something solid and extend past the port without loading it. That is a claim about a mechanism's geometry, which the people who designed the mechanism are in a position to specify.
Put plainly: 45 cm is not our estimate of how far a grey squirrel can jump. A grey squirrel can very likely clear it. The point is that a squirrel arriving by air has to land on the feeder, and landing on the feeder is what closes the ports. Distance defeats the lean. The mechanism defeats the landing. Neither one is asked to do the other's job.
That is also the honest limit of what placement alone can achieve. A feeder sited perfectly but fitted with no weight mechanism is still a feeder a squirrel will reach eventually. Placement makes a good mechanism work; it does not substitute for one.
Do squirrel baffles work, and where should one go?
A pole baffle works on one route only — the climb up the pole — and it fails the moment the squirrel does not need that route. That is why baffles have a reputation for working brilliantly in one garden and doing nothing in the next. A baffle stops an animal climbing past it. It does nothing about an animal that arrives from a fence panel, a wall top or the branch overhead, which in a typical British garden is most of them.
So a baffle is a clearance tool, not a clearance substitute. Fitted to a pole standing in genuinely clear air, it closes the last approach that clearance cannot. Fitted to a pole standing next to a fence, it is decoration.
Two things are worth separating here, because the same word covers both. A pole baffle is a separate dome or cylinder you fit below the feeder to block the climb. The dual all-metal baffles on a PestOff 3.0 are part of the feeder itself. Roamwild's own description is that the dual all-metal baffles and the anti-cling ring "defeat squirrels from every angle". They are not a substitute for a pole baffle, and a pole baffle is not a substitute for them.
On the question everybody actually asks — how wide the baffle should be, how high off the ground it should sit, and how far the pole should stand from the nearest fence — we have the same answer as the rest of this guide. The figures in circulation (a 24-inch dome, a bottom edge four to four and a half feet up, a pole ten to fifteen feet from any launch point, and a claimed success rate of "roughly 95%" with no methodology behind it) come from the same unsourced retailer pages as the 5-7-9 rule. We repeat them here only to say that not one of them can be traced to anybody who tested anything. Roamwild has not published baffle geometry of its own, so this guide does not print a number it cannot stand behind. The principle holds without one: the baffle is only as good as the clear air around the pole it is fitted to.
How do you site a bird feeder, step by step?
Site a bird feeder in eight steps: find the clear air before you choose the view, mount it on a pole or a wall bracket rather than a branch, never fix it to the fence, check the clearance above and behind as well as in front, give the birds cover to escape to without giving predators cover to wait in, keep it out from under roosting spots, move it somewhere fresh each week once the birds have settled to it, and watch what actually happens for a fortnight before you change anything else.
- Find the clear air first, then worry about the view. Stand where you want the feeder and look for the nearest solid thing a squirrel could brace on — fence rail, wall, trellis, drainpipe, trunk, or the branch above. You need at least 45 cm to all of them, upwards included. The branch above is the one people forget.
- Prefer a pole or a wall bracket to a branch. A branch gives a squirrel a route in and something to hold. A smooth pole or a PestOff wall bracket mounted high on open wall gives it neither, and lets you set the clearance deliberately instead of accepting whatever the tree offers.
- Never fix a feeder to the fence. A fence line is a squirrel's motorway and a rat's patrol route. It is also the one position where you cannot meet the clearance rule in at least one direction, however carefully you hang it.
- Check the clearance from above and behind, not just in front. Most gardeners sight the gap they can see from the kitchen window and miss the wall the feeder is backed onto. Walk round it.
- Give the birds cover to escape to, without giving predators cover to wait in. Site the feeder not too close to bushes where a cat could hide in wait, but close enough to cover that birds can easily dart away — somewhere quiet where they won't be disturbed, sheltered from harsh winds, with a clear view all around while they feed. There is no reliably sourced distance for this, so we won't invent one.
- Do not hang a feeder where birds roost above it. Avoid putting a feeder under places where birds perch and roost, such as under overhanging trees — droppings fall straight onto the feeding station below.
- Move it every week — once the birds have found it. Shift the feeder to a different spot each week, clear away any old food or droppings from the ground beneath it, and clean the feeder itself at least once a week. Rotation stops contamination building in one patch of ground, and it has a squirrel-proofing benefit too, because a squirrel that has learned one approach route has to start again. Leave a brand-new feeder in one position until the birds are using it, though — moving it during those first weeks only resets their discovery clock.
- Watch what actually happens for a fortnight. Squirrels are individuals. If one has found an angle, you will see it, and the answer is almost always another few centimetres of clearance rather than a different feeder.
Where do you hang a feeder in a garden with no clear middle?
In a garden with no clear middle — walled, fenced, balconied or full of mature trees — take the 45 cm clearance in the directions you can get it rather than hunting for one spot that is clear in every direction at once, and mount the feeder on a bracket or a pole rather than on the boundary itself. Most placement advice assumes a lawn with room for a pole in the middle of it. Plenty of British gardens are not that.

On a balcony, railings are continuous bracing, so clearance is the whole game. A balcony is the one setting where the 45 cm figure is hardest to meet and matters most, because a squirrel on a railing has a solid anchor for its hind feet in a way it never has in open air.

In a garden with mature trees, the branch above the feeder is the constraint, not the trunk beside it. Moving a bird feeder relocates the mess underneath it, it does not reduce it. Placement decides where spilled seed lands, which is why siting and spill are the same problem and why a feeder that spills has to be solved at the feeder rather than at the spot.
Seed on the ground is what draws rats into a garden and what keeps pigeons camped under the feeder all day. - Treating placement as a substitute for mechanism. Clearance stops the lean. It does not stop an animal that lands on the feeder — only the ports do that.
